On Friday, Apple unveiled its iPhone 14 series. One of the most significant new features is the ability to connect to satellites to deliver emergency messages when no WiFi or cellular data connection is available.
According to an iFixit study of the phone and an Apple statement, Apple Inc's iPhone 14 models have a Qualcomm Inc chip that can communicate with satellites, but also have extra custom-designed Apple components utilised in the phone's largest new feature.

Apple said earlier this month that the iPhone 14 models include new technology that enables the emergency messaging service, which Apple hopes to activate with a software update in November. Apple did not provide any information on the satellite-specific hardware.

On Friday, iFixit, a San Luis Obispo, California-based company that disassembles iPhones and other consumer gadgets to determine how readily they can be fixed, disassembled an iPhone 14 Pro Max model, showing a Qualcomm X65 modem chip.

The Qualcomm chip enables 5G connection for cellular networks, but it can also utilise band n53, the frequency range used by Globalstar satellites.
