Users have been requesting a native tool to record the screen on Chromebooks for years. There are a few Chrome extensions that do the job well, but they charge exorbitant fees to gain access to even basic features. It was therefore heartening to see Google finally include a native screen recorder on Chromebooks in 2020. For nearly two years, the feature has been available on the stable channel. Not to mention, Google has since released a new Screencast app on Chrome OS, bringing advanced screen recording with annotation, webcam view, transcription, and other features to Chromebooks. So, if you want to record the screen on your Chromebook, just follow the steps below.
Use Screen Recorder on Chromebook (August 2022)
We've included three simple methods for recording the screen on a Chromebook in this article. While the first two features are native to Chrome OS and work flawlessly, the third method is required if you want to record device audio in addition to the screen. So, let's get started.
1. Screen Capture allows you to record your Chromebook's screen :
Step 1 : Open the Quick Settings menu in the bottom-right corner of your         Chromebook to record the screen. You'll notice a "Screen capture" tile             here, which you can open by clicking on it. To access the Screen Capture           feature, use the Chromebook keyboard shortcut "Ctrl + Shift + Overview          key (above 6 key)."

Step 2 : The Screen Capture option will appear in the bottom-bar menu. To use the screen recording feature, click the video icon. On the right, select whether you want to record full-screen, partial-screen, or active window.

Step 3 : Finally, press the "Record" button to begin recording the screen on your Chromebook. During my testing, I saw no stutters while recording in any of the three modes. The video quality of the screen recording was also excellent.

Step 4 : You can also record audio by clicking the "Settings" icon and selecting "Microphone" under "Audio input." You can now add your webcam view to screen recordings as well, thanks to the most recent update. Isn't that fantastic?

Step 5 :Click the stop icon in the taskbar to end the screen recording. The recorded screen will then be saved in WEBM format in the "Downloads" folder.

Step 6 :In addition to screen recording, the new tool includes a new and simple way to take screenshots on a Chromebook. To access the new screen capture mode, use the "Ctrl + Shift + Overview button (above 6 key)" shortcut. What I like about this tool is that it remembers the position of the last screenshot in partial mode, which speeds up the workflow.

2. Record Screen on Your Chromebook with Screencast :
Screencast is a new screen recording app for Chromebooks from Google. If you've upgraded to Chrome OS 103, you'll find this app in the app drawer. Screencast is an advanced screen recording tool aimed at students and teachers, but anyone can benefit from this fantastic new tool. You can create engaging lessons and demos by using Screencast on your Chromebook to record your screen.
Step 1 :Ensure that your Chromebook is running Chrome OS 103. Then, open the App Drawer and select the Screencast app.

Step 2 :Next, in the top-left corner, click "New Screencast" to begin screen recording on your Chromebook.

Step 3 :After that, you can record the screen in full-screen, window, or partial mode. The microphone and webcam are enabled by default, but can be turned off by clicking the "settings" icon at the bottom.

Step 4 :Now, on the shelf, click the red icon to begin recording. Annotations can be made by clicking the "pen" icon, and the webcam view can be dragged to any corner. When you're finished, click the red "stop" button on the Chrome OS Shelf.

Step 5 :The recording will be available in the Screencast app. You can review and edit the transcript here.

Step 5 : Finally, click "Share" to generate a shareable link for the screen recording. It should be noted that Screencast does not save the video locally, which is unfortunate.
3. IN CONCLUSION
So those are the three simplest methods for recording the screen on your Chromebook. While the basic Screen Capture feature is excellent, I would have preferred that the tool allow me to select the file format, as WEBM is not a video format that I am familiar with. While the Screencast app is excellent, a local download option would be even better. That's all we have for now.
